It’s time to raise the rate.
Increasing Newstart by about $10 per day will get Newstart working, so it can deliver the support people need to get through tough times and into suitable employment. It will mean people can focus on their futures rather than being totally consumed with the financial crisis they’re facing. Raising the Newstart rate will make the system stronger and give people looking for paid work the best chance to get through tough times and find suitable employment. Help us send a message to our leaders that it’s time to Raise The Rate and get Newstart working. Sign the petition now.

To the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader, Australia’s income support system was designed to help people when they are going through tough times to support them into suitable paid work. But Newstart is not working – the rate has not been increased in real terms for 25 years, while living costs for people on low incomes have gone through the roof. The current rate of $40 per day is too low to give people the support they need to scrape by and get through tough times. Instead of supporting people, the current Newstart rate forces them into a cycle of debt, social isolation and humiliation that undermines their efforts and risks them slipping through the cracks into a cycle of poverty. The rate of Youth Allowance has not been increased in 25 years either and is even lower than Newstart. Raising these rates by $75 a week will get Newstart and Youth Allowance working by allowing people to focus on building the skills they need to take the opportunities to get them through tough times. It will mean people can focus on their futures rather than having to be totally consumed with their current situation of financial crisis. We call on you to clearly commit to urgently raising the rate of single rates Newstart, Youth Allowance and related allowances by a minimum of $75 per week and indexation to wage movements.
