On 10 November, the Prime Minister announced that the government is planning to cut the Coronavirus Supplement from 1 January, and extend it to 28 March.
The Government’s decision of a Christmas cut for people on the lowest incomes is a cruel and damaging mistake, especially during record-high unemployment. It’s a brutal blow that would take away even more of what is keeping millions of people afloat. This cut will hurt people doing it tough, as well as the country’s economic recovery, and could sink hundreds of thousands of people into poverty.

What should I say?
No more cuts
The Prime Minister’s announcement on Tuesday was a brutal blow to millions struggling to stay afloat. Far from an ‘investment’ as the Government is calling it, the Christmas cut will reduce the incomes of people doing it tough to only $50 a day at a time when more people than ever are struggling to get back on their feet. It was yet another cut and another temporary policy, heightening the mental and financial stress of millions. We say no more cuts and no more short-term measures.
Share your story
Many of you have courageously shared your stories of struggling to survive on the brutal old Newstart rate of $40 a day. You’ve shared what the increase to JobSeeker has meant to you, finally being able to access the essentials, like prescription glasses, a fridge and warm jumpers for children to get through the winter. And how you are now faced with an uncertain future and the torment of going back to choosing between keeping a roof over your heads, paying for utilities or putting food on the table. These are the stories that politicians need to hear. We can never go back to $40 a day.
Cover the basics
We need to remind politicians that while most people are looking forward to the holidays and a new year, people on the lowest incomes are struggling to survive and that won’t get any easier on at the end of March. Remind them what an incredible impact the April increase to JobSeeker, Youth Allowance and other income support payments has had on people’s lives. It meant no longer having to choose between covering rent, paying utility bills, getting necessary medical treatment, and eating three meals a day. Remind them that virtually every dollar of those payments go back into the local economy, supporting their community and the COVID recovery. Remind them that 1.1 million children live in homes receiving the higher rate of income support through the Coronavirus Supplement. Remind them that they, overnight, could help everyone cover the basics – they did it once, and they could do it again.
